Brigham Young Signed Letter – COA JSA

When it comes to autographs this request was a moment to remember. Oftentimes the request is made for a benefit of some kind and this was such. One such person named, Samuel Avery requested the autograph of Brigham Young. This request was on behalf of the solidiers and to be presented at the local Sanitary Fair. The letter (7-3/4″ x 7-3/4″) itself dated to April of 1863 was handwritten by one of Young’s crew in response to the request.  Young obliged his signature in closing in black pen (“8″). Overall, a rare and remarkable autograph.

Sanitary fairs were fund-raising events held in various cities on behalf of the United States Sanitary Commission to raise funds and supplies for the Union Army during the American Civil War. Established in 1863, the last major event was held in 1865 in Chicago. From the outset of the USSC, many local groups sponsored fundraising events to benefit the Commission. As the civil war progressed, these became larger and more elaborate. Organizing these Sanitary Fairs offered ways for local communities to participate directly in supporting the war effort of the nation.

Brigham Young was an American religious leader and politician. He was the second president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) from 1847 until his death in 1877. He also served as the first governor of the Utah Territory from 1851 until his resignation in 1858.
