Charlie Chaplin is one of the most celebrated figures from the era of silent films. He became a performer on the vaudeville circuit in England when he was a child. His older brother, Sydney, became his manager and he was hired by director Mack Sennett for his Keystone Film Company in 1914, and it was with Sennett where Charlie invented his signature character “The Tramp.” In 1919 Charlie co-founded the United Artists film distribution company with Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and D. W. Griffith. “Talkies” were introduced in 1927, but Chaplin managed to successfully avoid them through the 1930s. His first film with dialogue was “The Great Dictator,” a spoof leveled at Hitler.
