Here’s a very rare stock copy of the very rare recording of “Sister Morphine,” produced by Faithfull’s then-boyfriend Mick Jagger and featuring various Rolling Stones–as well as Ry Cooder and Jack Nitzsche–on backup. Accounts of the chronology differ, but some insist that this was the first recording of “Sister Morphine,” and that the Stones version, which appeared on their 1971 Sticky Fingers album, was recorded later. In any case, there is general agreement that although the track credits Jagger-Richards as the songwriters, the lyrics were actually penned by Marianne herself, and Jagger wrote the music.

This was finally acknowledged many years later on a Stones reissue compilation. The main reason for this single’s rarity is that in England Decca recalled the 45 after a few days because of its overt drug subject, and in the U.S. the .45 was banned by most radio stations, and record stores returned their copies to Decca. This is also the reason why the stock copy is much rarer than the promo in this case. This copy overall is in EX condition.
