The image displays a framed (23″ x 35″) photograph of a Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk stealth aircraft, notably covered with 25+ signatures, from individuals associated with the aircraft or its program. The Nighthawk’s pilots called themselves “Bandits” so many of the autographs on the poster in black felt tip have their Bandit # inscribed. Note, some of the autographs have faded out. Each of the 558 Air Force pilots who have flown the F-117 has a Bandit number, such as “Bandit 52”, that indicates the sequential order of their first flight in the F-117.
The F-117, often referred to as a “stealth fighter” despite being an attack aircraft, was the world’s first operational stealth aircraft, designed to avoid enemy radar detection.
The centerpiece is the iconic F-117 Nighthawk, known for its distinctive faceted design and radar-absorbing materials that minimize its radar signature.
The F-117 played a significant role in military operations, notably during the Gulf War in 1991, where it conducted precision strikes on heavily defended targets with high success rates and no losses. Although officially retired in 2008, the F-117’s legacy continues to influence the development of modern stealth aircraft, and some units reportedly remain in service for specific purposes.
Pilots told friends and families that they flew the Northrop F-5 in aggressor squadrons against Tactical Air Command.
