Star Trek Arsenal of Freedom Movie Prop COA Ron Moore

This is the Echo Papa movie prop from the first season, 21st episode of the Star Trek New Generation.  Dan Curry built this model and it was the stand in movie prop as they needed a back up for the show. Also included, is the CD, which host the original rough cut version of this episode.  Shown is the original robot that was NIXED due to the inferior look.  This is when Ron Moore and Dan Curry built the Echo Papa.

The Echo Papa 607 was an advanced weapon system developed by the arms merchants of Minos.

Intended to be a complete weapon of war, the Echo Papa 607 was able to automatically send out small drones to gather intelligence, take prisoners, and mount attacks. The main advantage of the system was its progressive adaptability; data on enemy equipment and tactics was returned to the parent system each time a drone was destroyed, and a new drone was manufactured which improved on the previous model; countering the enemy’s abilities. The process of analyzing each encounter and replacing a drone took only twelve minutes, and through this method the drones quickly became impossible to stop.

Star Trek: The Next Generation Screen Used “Echo Popa 607” Props from “The Arsenal of Freedom” (1988).   This is the stand in movie prop for this episode.

This the ORIGINAL  “Echo Papa” drone prop, all designed, built, and hand-painted by visual effects supervisor Dan Curry, used on screen in the Star Trek: The Next Generation season one episode, “The Arsenal of Freedom.” On the design and construction of the painted, complete drone, Curry says: “I had the idea of a shape that hovered with a larger artifcial intelligence and weapons unit with a single projection below containing a phaser-like weapon that would also function as a stabilizer… I used a plastic Easter egg, a shampoo bottle with part of it cut away, a piece of ribbed cover for electrical wires and cables, and a L’eggs panty hose container… I then applied a coat of grey primer and then airbrushed several coats of subtly iridescent metallic colors, mostly gold with hints of magenta, green and blue.”

“In this episode the Enterprise was threatened by a large orbiting drone weapon that had an invisibility cloak and impossible to locate. Geordi realized that by luring it into the planet’s atmosphere its re-entry heat friction would be visible and the Enterprise could destroy it. ”  The model with the steel rod measures approximately 10″ x 5″ x 21″.  The bottom laser shooting mechanism (ie L’eggs container) has been broke, showing light wear from use and age. Some plastic pieces come loose easily. Fragile.

Ronald B. Moore is an American visual effects producer and five-time Emmy award winner. Moore was the visual effects supervisor on Star Trek spin-off series Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Enterprise. He was involved with such films as Ghostbusters and Birdman.

He is not to be confused with Ronald D. Moore, one of his co-workers who served as a scriptwriter on Star Trek: The Next Generation.
