Rich Strike Kentucky Derby Winning Saddle COA Provenance Sonny Leon

Directly from Jockey Sonny Leon, this is the saddle he wore to win the 2022 Kentucky Derby as a long shot.  Sonny Leon is the shot in the dark heard ‘round the world. He is a dream turned into destiny, a tale of happy happenstance and pinch-me improbability.

Rich Strike’s victory was the second for a Venezuelan jockey at the Derby, 51 years after Gustavo Ávila rode Canonero II in 1971. The day before his victory in the Kentucky Derby, Leon jockeyed six races at Belterra Park. Leon has 770 career wins in the United States.

This is the black patent leather saddle that he rode on Rich Strike when he came across the finish line.  He also wore this in the  Belmont Stakes.  This saddle was a heavier style saddle, as Leon needed to get a little more weight to make the weigh-in.  As seen in the photo styles, the smooth round edges on the saddle are identical.  The long strap that hangs down is the same style.
