“The Shooting Stars” was a comedic basketball team formed by Harlem Globetrotters legend Meadowlark Lemon. Following a 1979 business dispute and a brief stint acting in television and movies, Lemon left his post at the Globetrotters to launch his own touring entertainment teams, eventually creating the Shooting Stars in the mid-1980s.The Shooting Stars were active from 1984 to 1987. Lemon designed them as a direct competitor to his former team, featuring a blend of slam dunks, no-look passes, and slapstick crowd work. The Shooting Stars roster largely mirrored the entertainment style he perfected over 24 years with the Globetrotters. After his run with the Shooting Stars concluded, Lemon went on to found another comedic team, “Meadowark Lemon’s Harlem All-Stars” in 1988.
