Presented is a golf pin flag from the Mercedes Championships tournament. It was dated by the handwritten notation in the corner ’96. 20 Signers in black felt tip (varying quality) include Greg Norman, Ben Crenshaw, Mark O’Mera, Corey Pavin, John Daly, Jim Furyk, Davis Love II and others. The shadowbox display measures in at 20″ x 25″ with 2″ thickness.

Mark O’Meara hit 16 of 18 greens and made six birdies, shooting a bogey-free 66 to take a four-stroke lead into the final round of the 1996 Mercedes Championships. O’Meara started the day one stroke behind leader Lee Janzen and moved into a tie when Janzen, his playing partner, bogeyed the fifth hole. O’Meara then birdied four of the next six holes to take command.

“I was putting some distance between me and the other guys,” O’Meara said of his run. “But I still have to play a solid round of golf tomorrow to win the golf tournament.” His 54-hole score of 13-under 203 was four better than Nick Faldo, who shot 68 to get to 9 under par. Another stroke back were Jim Gallagher Jr., Scott Hoch, Corey Pavin and Janzen.

While four strokes is a sizable lead, John Huston last year took a four-stroke lead into the final round and shot 77 to finish ninth. “A four- or five-shot lead with 18 to play is certainly not insurmountable,” Pavin said. “It’s not even close to insurmountable.” Defending champion Steve Elkington shot 70 and was at 4 under, nine strokes back. Greg Norman shot his third consecutive 73 and was at 219.

John Daly shot 73 and was 21 strokes back at 224, in last place. Faldo, who averaged 69.82 in final rounds last year, seventh best on the tour, could be close enough to apply some pressure on O’Meara.
