1960 Hemmets Journal Complete Collection Set with Binder & Cassius Clay RC Rookie Card Muhammad Ali – SGC

In 1960, the Olympics were held in Rome, Italy. The event became the first international showcase for a young boxer named Cassius Clay, who, of course, went on to even greater heights as Muhammad Ali.  The Swedish publication (Hemmets Journal) released an issue of trading cards printed on thin, glossy paper that commemorated the top Olympic athletes that were meant to be housed in a binder.

Presented is the rare Swedish 1960 Hemmets Journal, complete with original red binder and all 21 issued sheets, one of which includes Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali). The 21 sheets (4.5 x 6.25 inches) are in Excellent condition overall. All but one of the sheets features four panels, with each panel depicting a different international athlete. Ali’s card is #23 in the set and pictures him in profile. The album (4.75 x 6.5 inches), which is titled Sportens Stjärnor Journal” on the cover, is in Excellent condition.

Included is one of those 1960 Hemmets Journal panel cards encapsulated. Of course it was the Cassius Clay one. This panel was a part of the series; the holes in the margin are original to the piece, enabling it to fit it into the binder. Naturally, Cassius Clay would prove to be the most significant figure to emerge from those Games, establishing this rookie card as, by far, the most desirable of the Hemmets breed.

The athletes depicted in this panel card include: Swedish speed walker, John Ljunggren, American track and field athlete, Wilma Rudolph; American boxer, Cassius Clay; and Danish footballer, Harald Nielsen. The Clay card is considered to be one of the earliest cards to depict the gold medalist and future heavyweight champ. The panel itself has some natural creasing from storage/age and it was encapsulated and deemed authentic “A” by SGC.
