And here presented is an opportunity for the presidential autograph collector to attain the signature of our 19th Head of State. Rutherford B. Hayes, by this official authorization, has approved the appointment of one Bradford T. Simmons to the duties of Postmaster for Johnstown, New York. It was executed November 13, 1877 (Hayes’ first year in office), and sanctioned as well by Postmaster General, D.M. Key.
At 14×17, this document bears the President’s signature, R.B. Hayes toward the lower right. Though legible, the signature has mildly faded to a quality of “6-7″. The gold seal remains affixed, and the document was once neatly compacted with one vertical and three horizontal folds. These folds have induced considerable separation, no pertinent text of signatures have been violated. The display measures 23″ x 26”.
