Presented is an original first-generation vintage photo from the studio photograph of four boxers. The photo was taken by Harris’ Studio in Pittsburgh, PA. The photo is stamped on the back and has studio-raised markings on the front. The photographer was Teenie Harris. The photo is in VG condition with some surface wear (light impressions/aging).
From the Depression Era through the early 1970s, Teenie Harris earned renown as a trailblazer in professional photography. His atelier was in Pittsburgh where he operated an independent studio, but he plied most of his career in the service of the Courier, one of the Steel City’s dailies. Through much of his life, Pittsburgh epitomized the industrial northeast, but the city’s social composition was a dynamic quillwork of cultural diversity, and Harris’ images captured the urban flavor with a new level of skill.
Harris’s work was rarely seen outside of Pittsburgh until after his death.
In 2001, the Carnegie Museum of Art purchased Harris’ collection of 80,000 negatives from his estate.[Since 2003, the museum has scanned and cataloged nearly 60,000 images, many of which are available on the online collection database. Through outreach efforts, lectures and special events, and three Teenie Harris Archive Project exhibitions (in 2003, 2006, and 2009), the museum has asked for assistance in identifying the people, places, and events in the images The Museum staged a retrospective of his work in 2012, and in 2020, opened a dedicated permanent exhibition of Harris’ photographs titled In Sharp Focus: Charles ‘Teenie’ Harris.
