Presented is a sensational piece that projects the conscientious and immediately legible autograph of President Abraham Lincoln. This particular document was printed on vellum. The purpose was a final measure of legitimacy to a soldier’s promotion to Assistant Quarter Master and it was effected by the signatures of the President and the Secretary of War. The delicate document measures in at approx. 14×18 with compacting folds.
The full Lincoln signature is a welcomed departure from the more prevalent “A. Lincoln.” Because this document is of higher import (as opposed to a casual note or an obligatory signing of official minutia), he penned his expanded name Abraham Lincoln. Uniformly (and understandably), this signature is aged, yet every character is legible, clean and distinct – ultimately about “8″ in every respect. And though the contrasting surface is uneven, this Lincoln signature is on top of one of the compacting folds.
The other authorizing signature – that of Edward M. Stanton, Secretary of War. However, Stanton’s signing is more aged. And finally, we note two other particular details of this executive document. It bears an embossed blue Presidential Seal. Then, handwritten in the far upper left is an acknowledgement of this promotion’s receipt in the Attorney General’s Office.
