George Steinbrenner named Derek Jeter the captain of the Yankees on June 3, 2003, following eight seasons without a captain after Don Mattingly retired in 1995. That postseason, Jeter batted .314 with two home runs, five RBIs, and 10 runs scored across 17 playoff games, including three hits in Game 3 of the 2003 World Series against the Florida Marlins – the only three hits Josh Beckett allowed during the game. Jeter committed a crucial error in a Game 6 loss, and the Marlins won the series in six games.

Presented is a game used Derek Jeter home run baseball from Game 3 or the ALCS on October 11, 2003 that was between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. In the game, Derek Jeter’s hit a home run off Pedro Martinez to even the score at 2 in the top of the 3rd inning.

The OML (Selig) baseball shows game use throughout with soiling and hit marks. It was autographed on the sweet spot in black ballpoint (“8”) by Jeter. The baseball was notated with the game details in black in as well. “10/11/03 – DEREK JETER HR GAME #3 ALCS”.

The original owner tells the story in a typed/signed provenance letter. Also included is his ticket stub from the game as part of the provenance.

In summary:

On October 11, 2003, he was outside Fenway Park. It was Game 3 of the ALCS between the Red Sox and Yankees and a very tough ticket to get. Before the game he went behind the wall in left field to talk to the parking attendant who he was friendly with. Oftentimes home run balls that clear everything land in this particular parking lot. He asked the attendant to hold any home run balls for him that game.

In the game, Derek Jeter tied the game 2-2 in the middle innings. The ball cleared the fence and went into the parking lot. As soon as the game ended he went straight to the parking lot. The attendant had the ball and gave it to him for $200. Many years later after chasing him down, Derek Jeter signed the ball for him.
