For almost 75 years in The New York Times, artist Al Hirschfeld’s line illustrations captured the intensity of the American stage. A self-described “characterist”, Hirschfeld said his contribution was to take the character, created by the playwright and portrayed by the actor, and to reinvent it for the reader. His drawings, which often appeared before a show opening, gave many readers an insight into Broadway’s newest shows. Hirschfeld passed away in 2003.

Offered is a copy of Hirshfeld’s self-portrait. The image (8.5″ x 11″) depicts the the artist in a moment of concentrated work. Signed in blue felt tip.
