The jersey was autographed “Game Used”, held up by Ed Reed and acknowledged as his.  Yes, this all happened at the 2022 National Sports Collectors Convention in Atlantic City, New Jersey.  We were there personally at the Nationals, with Ed Reed, and Bobby Revilla on the phone.  The two chatted and reminisced.  Ed Reed took the time to autograph the back of his game-worn jersey on the numeral in black felt tip (“8”) for his former Equipment Manager.  Super huge validation from Ed Reed himself, with his inscription “Game-Used” on the jersey.

Ed Reed received an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Miami, where he was a standout defensive back for coach Butch Davis and coach Larry Coker’s Miami Hurricanes football teams from 1997 to 2001. Reed was a member of the Hurricane’s 2001 National Championship team. With Reed’s defensive domination that season, Miami was undefeated. In that National Championship (Rose Bowl), he had 9 total tackles to help beat the Nebraska Cornhuskers 37-14.

This game worn artifact originates from a team source.

Presented from their collection is an Ed Reed Miami Hurricanes game-worn-away jersey from 2001. It is a orange Hurricanes road jersey, that is multi-layered and designed by Nike. Of note, is the particularly rich hue of orange which showcases the mesh portion of the body. It features Reed’s number “20” printed on the chest, back, and shoulders in white with green borders.

On the back nameplate, “REED” is printed across the back shoulders in white lettering. The front chest features a Big East patch, a green Nike swoosh and the Miami “U” logo. The sides of the jersey are elasticized for fit and accented in orange, green, and white. A size “46” tag with a handwritten “1” designator in black felt tip is sewn on the front tail.  The “1” designator was written in by the equipment manager to denote SET 1.  According to the equipment manager Set 1 was a definite wear, Set 2 was worn, possible back up, and Set 3 was a back up.

Overall, the wear on the jersey is light with slight odor from the wear. The body of the jersey features some degradation and cracking on the identifiers. Despite its normal cleaning, it still shows the wear throughout. We have reviewed the Hurricanes programs and confirmed photo style match.

There is a provenance letter directly from Bobby Revilla which states:  “I am Bobby Revilla, foremer Equipment manager for the University of Miamia.  … The jersey was obtained by me from Ed Reed after a game.  We were gathering up game-used jerseys so that we could auction them and raise money to duild a field house for practice field equipment.  At this time we had the best players wear their jerseys for a couple of games and then I would take them after the game.  It woud have been after one of these games:  Sept. 8, Oc. 6, Oct 25, Nov. 3d, Nov 17,  Nov 24.”

Reed took the time to autograph the back numeral in black felt tip (“8”) for the team source which added value as well as his game use validation. The jersey was autographed “Game Used”, held up by Reed and acknowledged as his at the 2022 National Sports Collectors Convention in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
