Presented is a Baltimore Orioles jersey that was worn by the game’s most reliable employee, Cal Ripken, Jr. in 1999. The home white Baltimore Orioles jersey has classic “Orioles” duotone script black on orange tackle twill across the chest above Cal’s number “8.” The verso name on the namplate “RIPKEN” is also in black/orange tackle twill with his number below. But perhaps the most compelling facet of this important piece is the number “7” mourning patch on the right sleeve that remembers Cal the Elder in tribute to his deceased father and mentor.

Adjacent below is the Russell “R” embroidered in black. The orange Orioles logo bird patch is on the left sleeve. On the front left tail is the “RUSSELL ATHLETIC” manufacturer’s tag with size “50”, wash instructions and two flag tags reading “100% POLYESTER” and “2” EXTRA LENGTH”. Adjacent below is a white strip tag with the year designator “1999” printed in black. Note, there’s some disocoloration marks near the tagging (blood?). Overall, shows tremendous wear which is to be expected from this dedicated Hall of Famer.

Best known for surpassing Lou Gehrig’s streak for consecutive games played, a record many thought unbreakable, Baltimore infielder Cal Ripken bested the 56-year-old record when he played in his 2,131st game on September 6, 1995 in front of a sold-out crowd at Camden Yards. Ripken added 502 more games to the streak over the next three years, finally ending at 2,632 games when he asked to be removed from the lineup for the final home game of the 1998 season. In all, his record spanned over seventeen seasons, from 1982 to 1998. But Ripken was a lot more than a just a guy that showed up every day. He was a 19-time All-Star, member of the 3000 hit club, and smashed 431 lifetime homers, which included a string of ten consecutive 20+ homer seasons.
