1968-69 US Supreme Court Justices Signed FDC Cachet Display (Warren Court) – COA JSA

Presented is a collection of (9) First Day Covers autographed by United States Supreme Court Justices from the Warren Court. Signers include: Potter Stewart (Oliver Wendell Holmes – 1968); Byron White (College Football HOF – 1969); Thurgood Marshall (Emancipation Proclamation 1963); Hugo Black (Chief Justice Stone 1948); William Brennan (Constitution Anniversary 1937); William O’Douglas (Chief Justice Stone 1948); Earl Warren (Magna Carta 1965); John Marshall Harlan (Constitution Anniversary 1937) and Abe Fortas (United Nations 1945).

All of the signed cachets are attractively arranged around a central black and white 10×13 photo of the Court. The display measures 30.5″ x 38″.

The Warren Court was the period in the history of the Supreme Court of United States during which Earl Warren served as Chief Justice. Warren replaced the deceased Fred M. Vinson as Chief Justice in 1953, and Warren remained in office until he retired in 1969. Warren was succeeded as Chief Justice by Warren Burger.

Warren led a liberal majority that used judicial power in dramatic fashion, to the consternation of conservative opponents. The Warren Court expanded civil rights, civil liberties, judicial power, and the federal power in dramatic ways. The court was both applauded and criticized for bringing an end to racial segregation in the United Sates, incorporating the Bill of Rights (i.e. including it in the 14th Amendment Due Process clause), and ending officially sanctioned voluntary prayer in public schools.
