Presented is a black and white wire photo of Mickey Mantle taking a big swing at the plate. It is a fantastic 8×10 photo. The best thing is that Mickey signed this photo in black felt tip (“9-10”) and added the inscription, “To Pete, Best Wishes.” Note, the news photo has the caption detached with residue on the back. Overall, one of the best-signed Mantle photos you can find with a wonderful inscription.
The New York Yankees have so many numbers retired that it is fun to go through the list of names along with their easily identifiable number that have made their impact on the diamond. Mickey Mantle is forever identified with wearing #7. Interestingly however, Mantle was originally assigned #6 since he was seen as the next in line for Yankee greatness after Babe Ruth (#3), Lou Gehrig (#4) and Joe DiMaggio (#5). In the spring of 1951, he was showing some of the endless promise that had Yankee brass convinced he would become the franchise’s heir to Joe DiMaggio.
