Presented is one of the earliest Joe Montana game worn collectibles ever to exist. It is Joe Montana’s Ringgold High School basketball jersey.  This rarity is sourced directly from the family.

In high school, Joe Montana was a multi-sport threat. Montana who had surprising athleticism for his tall 6’2″ frame played baseball, basketball and football all throughout his teens.  Of course he could dunk a basketball easily so that was his main sport back at Ringgold High School.

“In eighth grade I could dunk,” Montana said. “In ninth grade, I could do anything you wanted dunking-wise. I could hit it off the glass, two-handed behind the head. Any kind of dunk you want, I could do.”

During his senior year, Montana helped Ringgold win the state title (1973 WPIAL Class AAA boys’ basketball championship) and received all-state individual honors. North Carolina State then offered Montana a basketball scholarship and he seriously considered it. His consideration was bolstered even more by a promise from NC State coaches that he could play both football and basketball if he attended.

But he wanted to attend Notre Dame and football was the ticket. While shining on the hardwood, Montana was also the Rams’ starting quarterback for his junior and senior years. Once in South Bend, Ind., he started buried on the depth chart and played recreational basketball. He nearly switched to basketball after multiple guards either transferred or were sidelined with serious injuries. Montana ultimately became a football superstar with the Irish.

Sewn into the interior collar of this RAMS High School Jersey is a swatch tag with red stitched-on player identifier “Joseph C. Montana Jr. 41336”.  There is tagging in the left front tail which is sewn on “Wilson | 38”.  The Wilson tagging is consistent with the 1971-era style.  “38” would be the correct size for Montana at this age.  Written underneath the front tail in black sharpie is “Montana Moses”.  Moses was his ex-wifes last name.  This jersey was given as a gift to Montana’s young brother-in-law (t the time) as he not only supported him showing up to his games but also threw footballs to the young lad making incredible memories for the boy.

The creme durene material sports gold/white/purple/gold ribbed gusset seams, underarms and collar.  “RAMS 33” is purple felt with gold zigzag stitching on front and player numeral identifier sewn on back.  The jersey shows evidence of wear and washing. There are no photo styles or photo matches readily available since there is not enough footage or photos during this era.  However, we have the provenance document and testimony of Montana’s ex-brother-in-law.  The tagging both in the tail and in the collar are absolutely correct.

“I am Jeff Moses, former brother-in-law of Joe Montana. Joe gave me this jersey personally. I attended many of his high school games with my family. He was gracious and gave me this jersey. This was during his years of high school at Ringgold in Monongahela, PA.”
